Cultivating Anti-Racist Communities

Racism is not merely individual prejudice. Rather, it is a complex network of policies, practices, and cultural norms that create and maintain racial hierarchies. While it may often be fueled by individual biases and behaviors, it is ultimately much bigger than a matter of personal beliefs or straightforward acts of prejudice.

In the six lectures of Cultivating Anti-Racist Communities, you’ll join Giovanna Fischer, PhD, of the Los Angeles LGBT Center to explore how each of us can contribute to building a fairer and more equitable world through community and connection. You’ll begin by gaining a better understanding of how racism operates on a systemic level, as well as what defines genuine anti-racist action. With this important foundation established, you’ll then move on to developing concrete strategies for transformation within your own reach and abilities.

While Dr. Fischer provides formal definitions and vital context to enrich your understanding of racism and its systemic effects, she also demonstrates the value of imagination in this important work, centering collaboration, engagement, and creating environments where everyone can contribute authentically. And it isn’t easy work; anyone willing to create and sustain a strong community must be ready to face challenges and discomfort along the way.
